Warm-Up 2

Warm-Up 2 is all about complaining. 'The Hire Car from Hell' is all about really bad treatment when renting a car in the USA. The idea for this Warm-Up came from the wonderful film, "Trains and Planes and Automobiles", with Steve Martin and John Candy. The task is set up so that you don't have any other option than to write a well-composed letter to the company in the USA - and hope for the best. The sum of money involved is too small to make it worth your while starting a legal action (at least from this side of the Atlantic - it'd be different if you were living in the USA, where they have Small Claims Courts). There's also a lot of scope for 'he said-she said' situations (which is how they describe situations where one person says one thing, and the other person says something different in American English).

The task itself is quite limited: you only have to write FIVE sentences from the letter you'd write (i.e. NOT the entire letter). The point is to see whether you can calibrate your language, so that you express yourself firmly, but refrain from insults and gratuitous comments that will just result in your letter being filed in the trash can! Once again, there's a link to the Send-In Task which comes next.

You submit your Warm-Up Task 2 by copying your text into a comment. Remember to include FIVE sentences only - and to include your name in the submission.

By the way, if you don't know what the 'redeye' is, take a look at the first comment on this post.

39 comments:

  1. The 'redeye' is a flight which involves you getting on it in the evening your time, but getting off in the morning at your destination's time, meaning that you're going arrive having missed a night's sleep, but having a whole day in front of you before you can sleep again - hence the redness of your eyes!

  2. To my big misery I happened to rent a car from your company at the New York airport.
What I’ve got for my in advance credit card payment, after I have been brutally left standing alone on the car park beside the wrecked car in a pouring rain, was the dirtiest and most badly serviced car I have ever seen in my entire life. When the car engine stopped I managed to get in touch with your company and I were told to pay a tow truck driver $50 call-out charge and that I would be compensated for it later. I got a lot of promises as adjusted charges, 50% discount on the hire change, but I have been debited for the full amount anyway. I am terrible disappointed and I hope you’ll take an action to compensate afterwards all the extra expenses and suffering to me, or I’ll make sure that it will be damned well- known how badly you treat your customers.

  3. WarmUp 2-The Hire Car from Hell

    Dear Sirs
Unfortunately I had a bad experience with the car I hired from your local office at JFK airport last week and it is with regret that I write this letter to complain about the inconvenience this caused.

I repeatedly contacted your hire office at JFK airport regarding this matter but they claimed to have no knowledge of my previous complaints.

The car was in an appalling state with no washer fluid, faulty warning lights and an engine that broke down on the freeway – this put me in a dangerous situation as well as my fellow road-user and we can all be pleased that no accident happened.

I still believe that your intention is to put things right by living up to your promises to give me 50% refund on the hire charge including the vehicle insurance and to cover the tow truck services of §50.

I hope that we can promptly solve this inconvenience in a proper way.

  4. On my recent business trip to New York, I was shocked and gravely disappointed at the quality standards and level of service your company provided me in my car hire.

After being dropped off at the edge of the car park with impending downpour I found the car in a state of absolute disarray, reeking and strewn with rubbish.

Left with no alternative means of transportation, I was forced to accept the state of the car only to be confronted by a lack of washer fluid and dirty windscreen followed by total engine failure on the highway.

Reassured by the promise a refund for the costs incurred and a discount on my total charges would be issued, I left to catch the 'red-eye' out of town only to find my credit card had been charged the full amount.

I am confident you will act swiftly in rectifying this situation and refund the $50 tow-truck charge as well as the promised 50% discount in total charges avoiding the risk of a negative impact on your reputation.

  6. On a business trip to New York I decided to hire a car at the airport from your company, unfortunately that turned out to be a big mistake as I was soon to find out.
I was taken to the car park and left there by the car only to discover that it was in horrible condition, smelling and full of rubbish.
Left without an option, I took the car only to notice that there was no washer fluid to clean the dirty windscreen followed later by an engine breakdown on the highway, something which could have placed me in a life threatening situation.
To my amazement, after taking the “red-eye” back to Europe, your company had debited me for the full amount, even though we had come to an agreement about you compensating me for the $50 call-out charge of the tow truck and giving me a 50% discount on the hire.
After being in contact with your airport office and receiving a total denial of any conversation taking place between me and their representative, I am now writing to you in order to obtain my compensation which would in this case result in your company not having to deal with bad publicity.

  7. On my recent business trip to New York I decided to hire a car at the airport from your company, unfortunately it turned out to be a big mistake. After being dropped off at the car park I found the car in a state of absolute disaster, a half-eaten pizza where on the back seat, the ashtray was full, and the car smelt of beer and sweat.

On the freeway the car broke down and I had to pay a tow truck to help me get the car going again, this also put me in a dangerous situation on the freeway. I contacted your hire office at the airport and they assured me that I would be compensated for my outlay and that I would receive a 50% discount for the inconvenience. When I came home I noticed that I had been charged the full amount, even though I thought I had an agreement about compensation with your company.

I repeatedly contacted your hire office at the airport regarding this matter but they claimed to have no knowledge of my previous complaints. I am now writing to you because I want to give you a chance to put things right and live up to your promises. I intend to take further action in this matter if you do not offer an immediate solution.

  8. Unfortunately I had serious troubles with the car I hired from your company at New York Airport last week, which I paid by credit card in advance.
The car I got was in a direful state with dirt all around, no washer fluid and an engine breaking down on the freeway and putting me in serious danger.
When I returned the car at the agreed time your office was closed so I left a note with the keys in your returns box.
Contacting your office I was promised a refund for the tow truck charge of $50 as well as a 50% reduction on the hire charge, but it appears that there has been a mistake in your billing as I was charged the whole amount without refund.
When getting in touch with your local office several times they claimed to have no knowledge of my case, but I am sure that you want this matter resolved soon.

  9. Gentlemen:

Your company may not realize this but it seems to be a mistake in your billing.

When I got the car from you it was in disorder and there was no washer fluid and after driving a while, the engine stopped and I had to call a tow truck driver who helped me getting the car started for $50.

Since there were several problems with the car I got in touch with your local company which told me that I would get my $50 back for the tow truck and they also ensured me that I would get a 50% deduction of the price when I returned the car at the airport.

9.00 pm I was back at the airport and the office was closed so I left them a note with the car key but when I got my credit card statement you had debited the full amount which wasn’t our agreement.

I hope this is just a mistake and that we can solve this problem by you recompensing me for my expenses and for the agreed price reduction.

    Faithfully yours,

  10. On March 4th I applied to your company to rent a car, but it was unsatisfactory.

I payed the hire in advance but received a littered car with no washer fluid and an engine which stopped so I had to call a tow truck with everything that involves.

In a telephone call with your company I was assured to be adjusted for the $50 the tow truck charged me and also get a 50% discount on the hire charge to compensate for the inconvenience.

However when I got the credit card statement I was debited for the full amount and I also missed the promised compensation.

I still have the expectation that you will do your share and I look forward to the $50 I pay for you and the compensation, and will after the correction afresh recommend your company.

  11. Last week, I rented a car from your firm which was less than satisfactory as the car itself was not cleaned before it was rented out.

On my way to New York, the car broke down and I had to pay the tow truck driver $50 for his services.

The following day I contacted your office to explain what has happened and they assured that I would be refunded for the reparation fee and a 50% discount would be applied to the charges as a sign of good faith.

Your company promised compensation but my recent credit card statement shows that you have charged me the full amount.

A correction has to be made and I expect that a reputable company as yourself would deliver on its promises.

  13. I am sorry to have to notify you of what happened on 25 January 2009 when I rented a car with your company, paying by credit card in advance.
I noticed immediately bad conditions of the car (for example I had the pleasure to find an eaten half of a pizza), but driving the car I had some disadvantage even with breaks so I was enforced to call and pay a tow truck to be pulled.
The day after I called to your number of complaints and they promised me to refund money that I had paid to the tow truck driver and a 50% discount on the hire charge.
Today, I received my credit card statement, I noticed that your company had debited me for the full amount, notwithstanding the promises.
I am sure we can solve this inconvenience amicably, if you give me more money in the refund of expenses, that I have not still received, or in other appropriate ways that you could propose me.

  14. On my last business trip to New York I rented a car from your firm on 27th February, number order 270208-08, which I paid by credit card in advance. Unfortunately series of bad unforeseen events related with the car and the service happened to me.

First I was left on impersonal way front of the car by the driver of courtesy bus without wait and ask if I need something else; second when I ride on the car I found it in really bad hygienically situation, remnants of pizza, ashtray were full; third a penetrating smell of beer and sweat and; fourth a dirty windscreen.

Moreover, on my way to the city mechanical problems with the car emerged: washer out of service, without reason the warning lights on the car turned on and the worst part was that the engine stopped.

Due to I was forced to pull myself the car and to pay for a tow truck. I ring twice to the company to explain my experience and I got the promise that the charges would be adjusted. However, I got my credit card statement and I noticed all charges are on.

Finally, I am confident that you take care of your costumers and will keep your promise to adjust the charges. As a businessman I am conscious that costumers are the most important for a company. Your reputation, quality and possible good imagine are on my mouth depending your answer.

  15. To whom it may concern,

I am writing to inform you of my dissatisfaction in hiring an out of function car, causing me inconvenience that I have not been compensated for.

With no other option I was left with a dirty car from your company with no washing fluid, and failing breaks that later caused the engine to shut down on the freeway.

For the inconvenience I have been promised 50% discount on the hire costs additional with 50$ back for what I paid the truck driver for call-out charge. To my surprise I was charged the full amount which was not in accord with our agreement.

If these conditions we have agreed on are not met, I am afraid I have to take legal actions in this matter. I look forward receiving your explanations with payments.

  16. I recently rented a car through your car rental company and I feel that even if you managed to arrange a car for my visit, with very short notice I do have a few questions and complaints that I would like to report to you.

When I received the car, the person who had rented it prior to me had forgotten to clean it, I found that the ashtrays were full and that there was a take away pizza in the back seat, nor were there any washer fluid in the windscreen cleaner.

On my way to the city from the airport where I had picked up the car, the engine stopped and I had to get help from a tow truck company. I contacted your company by phone and they assured me that if I paid him, you would repay me by deducting the amount on my rental hire. This has obviously not been done so, I wonder if there might have been a misunderstanding as I have given you the receipt together with the car keys.

As I contacted your company the day after renting the car, the person that I talked with assured me that except repaying what I had paid the Tow Truck Company you would also compensate me for the trouble that I had had with the car. He promised a 50% deduction of the car rental price, which I have not received.

  17. Dear Sir,
Recently I hired a car from your local office at the airport. I hoped there would not be any complications with the arrangement. Unfortunately I have to say that I am dissatisfied with your contribution and the lack of service you provided.
When I came to the rented car I discovered that the cars state was a disaster. I find the car smelling sweat and beer, the ashtrays was full and in the back seat I found half-eaten pizza.
However, there was nothing I could do at this moment as I was left alone by the car on the edge of the airport, so I headed off towards New York.
On the freeway the engine stopped. At this point I was hysterical because of the undesired surprises and the dangerous situation I was put through. Soon I managed to get in touch with an employee at the hire company; I was promised refund for $50 of my saving money I used to pay the tow tuck driver for repairing the engine as well as 50% discount for the inconvenience. I was looking forward to solve this problem on my way back to the airport but when I returned the office was closed.
After I arrived home I noticed on my credit card statement that you charged me for the full expense, which I believe must be a mistake. I hope you are going to solve this problem as soon as possible to the agreed reductions. A company like yours should carry out a promise.
    Yours faithfully,

I am writing you this email expressing my disappointed experiences with your company.

The quality of the rent car I got was of bad quality not to mention how dirty shape it was, like an old piece of take-away pizza at the back seat and the not emptied astray, for instance.

On top of all, your representative promised me the charges would be adjusted, $50 cash and 50% discount for all the misery I went through, which I figured is empty promises when I am being fully charged.

I expect you to take this matter seriously and take responsible to win back the reputation of your company.

To my surprise, I was debited the full amount for the rental.

There must be a misunderstanding, in view of the fact that I was promised a reduction of 50% as compensation for my inconvenience when I contacted a representative at your airport office regarding the problems.

I enclose a copy of the receipt for my payment of $50 to the tow truck company.

I am confident we can solve this situation.

  20. I recently leased a car from your airport office and I am writing to inform you of problems that occured during the time of lease.

The car was filthy on the inside, with full ashtrays and pizza in the back seat, there was no washer fluid and on top of that the engine broke down on the freeway and I had to pay for the tow truck out of my own pocket.

The airport office ensured me that I was going to be reimbursed for my inconvenience when I contacted them, but when I arrived at the airport at 9.00 pm there was no one at the front desk and upon recieving my credit card bill I noticed I had not been reimbursed.

I am writing to ask you to please look in to these matters and make up for this shortfall, as I was promised.

I am looking forward hearing from you soon.

  23. Dear Sirs,

Unfortunately I hired a car from your rental office at the JFK airport when I was at a business trip in New York for a week ago, this I wouldn’t have done if I knew what was going to happen.

The car you gave me in the dreadful weather was full of leftovers, it had dirty windshields, no washer fluid and the car was overall of a lousy standard, in fact, the car was so badly in shape that I had to call a towing truck as the engine broke down on my way to New York.

I couldn’t solve this problem as your office was closed and I am very upset because of the non-existing discounts that you promised me.

I strongly believe that your company wants to make everything right and pay me back my money your staff promised me of $50 plus the discount of 50 % on the hire charge.

I hope you will solve my and your problem in a good way so I don’t have to take this incident up on a higher level.

I payed the hire car fee in advance with my credit card, right at the desk of your airport office.
On my first trip, after I had received the car at the airport, it broke down on the freeway.
There was no choice but to pay the breakdown truck company, repairing the car on the spot, the requested fee of 50 $.
When I called your airport office, immediately after the incident, the staff promised to reimburse me with a fifty percent deduction of the hire fee and, of course, repayment of the 50 $ for the jump-start help.

I came in contact with your car hire company on my recent business trip to New York and I must say that I am extremely disappointed by the service quality that the car hire company gave me and the way they handle my case.

First of all, I was dropped off without a hint on what to expect and I was met by the most hideous sight and odor from pieces of old food and drinks spilled in the entire car.

And if that was not enough, the car smelled like cigarette and sweat, incredibly unpleasant and repulsive and not what you expect from a company with cars paid for in advance.

I paid for a hire car without washer fluid and if that was not enough, the engine stopped so that I had to call the hire company and they assured that they would pay the amount of money that the tower wanted for the job, but the company did not keep their promise and here I stand with paid expenses for a useless hire car.

I demand that you will contact this car hire company immediately and look over their operation, since the way the company handled my situation was a disgrace.

  27. Dear Sir,

At a businesstrip to New York I recently engaged your company at J.F.K hiring a car that turned out to be a complete wreck.I hardly reached town before the car broke down and I was stranded in a really unpleasant neighbourhood waiting for a tow truck for six hours!

When I contacted your office I received an oral assuranse that if I laid out the cash for the repair work and the extra rental car, I was going to get a refund and a generous discount when I returned your car at the airport.

Returned home I saw on my credit card statement that your company not only have charged me the whole amount, but also did not give nor a refund or a discount as promised.

I am confident that this must be a misstake of human error and would like to get in contact with you to clear things out.

I look forward to hear from you soon to clear out the misstake and make an amicable settlement.

When the car broke down on the high way, I spoke with one of your representatives who told me to pay the tow truck out of my own pocket, and that I would later be refunded.

When I received my credit card statement it was clear, however, that I had not received the $50 for the tow truck, nor had I received the 50% discount I was promised by your representatives.

Although I have spoken to your representatives several times, they now deny all knowledge of my situation, and they suggested me to write to you. I hope you can resolve my issue as soon as possible.

The car which I took was in very bad conditions: it hadn’t been clean before, there was half of pizza on the back seat, ashtrays were full and everywhere was smell of beer, but in spite of it I anyway decide to go(due to really bad weather) and I found that there was no washer fluid to clean windscreen from the dirty spray which was there and it have been not everything - finally engine stopped and I have to pay to the tow truck driver the $50 call-out charge for the call in your office.

Next day I got in touch with your office again and I was assured that the charges would be adjusted when i dropped the car off and furthermore i would get the $50 back and receive a 50% discount on the hire charge to compensate my inconvenience.

When I got to the airport at 9.00 pm to drop off car, I found your desk deserted, so I just put keys into the returns box and how I was surprised then when I received next credit card statement, that they'd debited for the full amount.

Finally I am sure that you take care about your customers and that was just some unexpected mistake, so I hope that you will keep the promise to adjust charges and get $50 back.

  36. Dear Sir,

I am writing you this letter because there has been a misunderstanding at one of you airport offices, which I hope you can help me to solve.

At February 15th I flew to New York on a business trip and rented a car from your company, unfortunately the car I rented was frightful in several ways.

I had no other options then to call a tow truck, which your company did said they would pay me back, including 50% discount on the hire charge for my inconvenience.
Unfortunately the office was closed when I was returning home in the evening, so I had to leave the car keys in the returns box, together with a note explaining al the trouble I been trough.

I truly believe we can solve this matter and I hope to hear from you soon.

  37. Dear Sir of Madam,

I am writing to inform you of my dissatisfaction with non-fulfilling your promise.
On 8 March 2009 I have hired the car in your company which was dirty enough with full ashtrays and slices of pizza. Moreover there was no washer fluid and the car had a problem with alternator which caused a lot of inconveniences for me.
I had to pay $50 to the tow truck for repairing it and your company has promised me to return this money and half of cost for hire as moral compensation. Besides that you have not made it I also didn’t receive the intelligible answer by phone.
I hope you will manage this situation and I looking forward to receiving my money as soon as possible.

    Yours faithfully,

    Violetta Kuvatova

  38. I hope this letter will wake your attention, about my issue. As I mentioned to you before on the phone, I paid to hire one of your cars by credit card, you offered me a courtesy bus to drive me where the car was parked.

It was raining, and the car was dirty, it lacked washer’s fluid and breaks, the car engine stopped down on freeway, a tow truck pulled up behind me to help, there service was paid in cash.

Your company promised to refund money in return, there was no one at the desk, when I returned the car, and I left the keys in the box.

After taking the “red eye” back to Europe, I noticed that I was debited for full amount, but I got no refund of any of the expenses, I therefore now claim for refund from your company as soon as possible before I take this issue further.

    Yours faithfully,

    Matilda, L

  39. Gentlemen,
    Re: Car Rental Troubles

I have rented a car your company (rental receipt: 33475) at New York International Airport on May 24th, 2009. I was rented an unclean car that had no washer fluid and on top of this broke down in the middle of the highway causing me not only to miss my appointment but also putting my life at risk.

I was told by your staff to pay for the $50 tow truck charge and that this will be refunded and that I would receive a 50% discount on my bill.

I was surprise to find that after all this I have neither been refunded the $50 tow truck fine nor did I received the promised discount. After failing to resolve the matter with your airport branch I will now be waiting on your response for this letter before taking the matter further.

    Faithfully yours,

    Peter Pelser
